Remake of The Agent (2020)

Plot

Charles, a retiree, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private investigator’s ad and becomes a mole in an undercover investigation at a nursing home. Michael Schur was inspired to create “A Man On the Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “Agent the Mole.” He says: “Agent the Mole” The documentary is powerful because it makes people feel surprisingly similar, regardless of age, ethnicity, and gender. I would describe this feeling in a very simplified way, saying: “I have to call my mother.” In our show, we tried to do something similar with the tone: in general, does our show contribute to that feeling of wanting to call our mothers?

To write a review of this show, you need to know the context and content

Having three parents dealing with the challenges of assisted living made it all the more enjoyable and meaningful. Ted Danson plays an 80-year-old widower (Charles) struggling to establish a new routine after his wife dies of dementia-related health issues. Through a series of classic sitcom plot devices, Charles lands a job as an undercover detective at a nursing home (as it was called) to solve a jewelry heist.

The best parts are Charles’s slow immersion in his new community, with little social connection to the other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson

His boss, Laila Richcreek Estrada as Julie, is a sarcastic, black-and-white foil who will do anything to solve the case to the gentle, staid Charles played by Danson. The two quickly confront the facility’s director (well played by Stephanie Beatriz as Diddy), Charles, his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various residents and their bizarre problems. There are some poorly conceived details, focusing on the elderly as wounded, that don’t fit into the rest of the stories, and Charles’ daughter’s three outrageously disrespectful (and interchangeable) teenage children are distracting and unnecessary.

The awkward banter between Charles and his boss Julie is hilarious

The jokes and deadpan comments about assisted living and what happens there are also funny. While his daughter Emily’s home life isn’t that interesting, there are some great scenes between her and Charles in later episodes. The ending isn’t too hard to figure out (who stole what and what will happen to Charles), but the sentimental bits of Charles’s awakening and acceptance of his wife’s death are very serviceable.

Overall, I recommend it, especially to viewers in their forties and up

There are a few small roles played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that might make older viewers laugh, but they’re mostly wasted on silly jokes about old people and sex.
