Plot
A family is invited to spend an entire weekend at a secluded home in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that a dark side lurks within the family that invited them.. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share what elements of their characters they found most intriguing and compliment each other as they discuss their different approaches to the craft.. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, the director of the original Danish Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on vacation in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were somewhat socially awkward, both couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from a Dutch family to come to Holland. He thought about it for a moment, but decided that it would be weird for him to stay with people he didn’t really know; his story for the film came about when he unleashed his darkest fantasies about what might have happened if he had accepted (though he claims the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes).

Act One: The setting is masterful
No, I’m not talking about McAvoy, but we’ll get to that. Nothing much happens this whole act, and yet I laughed and was intrigued. It’s a perfect example of how you can still create intrigue without the need for action, or worse, without an opening scene that spoils what happens later in the film. Act Two: Okay, now the lack of anything big happening becomes a shame. We should see some escalation, but it seems like there’s still a lot of setup.
Act Three: Escalation finally arrives, but not enough
The potential doesn’t reach the heights to make it memorable. And there are a couple of idiotic character decisions. One almost made me face it in the cinema. As for the husband played by Scoot McNairy, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a lamer husband in my life. I know it was intentional and didn’t hurt my enjoyment, but all I could think was, "Dude, you little…"Overall, this was a somewhat enjoyable one-watch type of movie.
