After years apart, the star-crossed lovers discover that every road they take leads back to each other
Plot
Local rebellious teenager Clothier falls in love with his schoolmate Jackie, but gang violence leads him down a darker, more destructive path. Beating Hearts was the lowest-rated film in the main competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival by French and international critics, who complained that the film was too long, full of clichés, romance, that it copied several classic American films, that the love story was not believable and that the two main actors had no chemistry and were overshadowed by two teenagers playing younger versions of their characters. Several critics and regulars also questioned why the film was chosen for Cannes’ main competition when there were better films out of competition or in the sidebars that could have taken its place. The Screen International Cannes Jury gave the film 1.4 out of 4 stars, while the Chaos Reign Cannes Jury gave the film 0.9 out of 4 stars and The Ioncinema Jury gave it 1.6 out of 5 stars.

. In Metacritic’s article on the best and worst films of Cannes 2024, Beating Hearts was the first to be listed as a “disappointment”. One of the characters wears a Rolex Daytona Ceramic in the 1990s, but the watch was not released until 2016. The first part with the children is very good.
The rest of the movie, the second act, is awful
The film should have ended there for the sake of the audience. And Gilles Lelouch would have directed one of the best French teen romances of the decade. Actors François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos have no chemistry, their performances in this film are bland and uncompromising. I suspect that both actors need to start rethinking their careers in French cinema, as both newcomers Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah overshadow and steal the show in this mediocre and confusing film.
A cheesy, stylized look for a man
At first, the movie feels like a modern version of The Count of Monte Cristo… I mean the old story of the offended young rebel who returns to seek revenge and search for his beloved. However, he falls with an exaggerated and caricatured toxic masculinity. And in the middle and end of the second act, the plot loses credibility.
Which we have already seen
The problem, which isn’t all about the whole thing, is the strange determination the film shows in claiming originality in every scene it presents without ever achieving it. Every time he makes a decision, he always chooses the most formal, the most obvious. And so, it is repeated, this year the French public will see three hours of the closest thing to a French blockbuster, with good marketing and public relations.
