Plot
CIA operative Joe tries to balance his personal and professional lives as the tip of the spear in the agency’s war on terror. Real-life military advisors helped create a more authentic performance of gun handling, house clearing, positioning, squad-based action, etc…. Mr. Sheridan knows how to introduce us to testosterone-fueled, macho worlds without cliché and, at first glance, without an agenda. It is what it is.
No excuses needed
His characters are always grounded, and he is extremely skilled at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The writing has to be as good, if not better, than it is for men. Dudes are simple. Women are smarter, more complex.
They are strong and compelling
Beth from Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone female ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Tit) all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural, effortless way. Not just the ‘partner of…’ or T & A. He stepped up his game with the excellent character Faith Hill, crushed in "1883" followed by Dame Mirren in the ignition cut that was "1923". Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best stuff of her career. I absolutely believe her as the CIA chief in an open marriage (nice touch).
What about her face!
I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t give up and thank you thank you thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her get the best of a fellow male soldier with an extra hundred pounds of muscle. Truth first! I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out cold or simply subdued to the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? From schmaltzy Hallmark dreck to super bad special forces?
I’m buying it
Special mention: Ms. Lanier as the nasty teenage daughter. I’m looking forward to the arc laid out for this loose canon as long as they continue to avoid the cliché of teenage angst. Good acting, could get interesting…
