This show has only the most tangential connection to the original series

Plot

It follows Madeline Matlock as she rejoins the staff of a prestigious law firm, where she uses her cunning tactics to win cases and uncover wrongdoing. Gender change in the original 1986 TV series of the same name, Matlock (1986) starring Andy Griffith as the title role of criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock. For legal reasons, they had to give it to Dean Hargrove based on a "Matlock series" loan.. In order for Matlock to be admitted to a New York law firm, they would have had to verify his law license status through one of three official mechanisms, each carefully managed by the state.

Remake of Matlock (1986)

This would have verified identity, address, current license status, disciplinary proceedings, etc. "Matlock in name only". I’m not sure if the showrunner or CBS executives thought of reusing the Matlock name. It wasn’t necessary, just says Kathy Bates, we’re there.

The biggest plus is, of course, Kathy Bates

If you want to return, just refer to “Harry’s Law”. Okay, so there’s no real connection other than the name and general occupation, so take this series on its own terms. But is it enough for more than one season? The writing and direction should step up to give Ms.

Bates a show worthy of her abilities

Pilots can be hard to figure out sometimes. Is this the best you can get or can they improve it to meet or exceed expectations? I hope it gets better, although the trailer for the next episode doesn’t give me high hopes. They set "Matlock" like a very shrewd character, but then it seems like you want to play it for the simplistic?

Maybe it was just the editing of the trailer and the episode is better than it looks

Since NBC sent L&O: Organized Crime to the phantom (pay TV) zone, I open on Thursday nights and this just might fill that slot.
