Plot
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-standing rivalry comes to a head. The same location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC television adaptation of Poldark. There was a terrible version of Jilly Cooper’s Riders in the ’90s, but television has since avoided her Bonkbusters; critics say Jilly Cooper’s novels are dated and silly.
Yes, it’s full of bad moments, boobs and bottoms, even the odd Willy
Far from the truth, Cooper ironically satirizes the upper middle class of the Cotswolds and has always had a knack for comedy, characters and entertaining plots. In many ways, their work was more like a Restoration comedy than a Carry On, where the characters had more development and inner lives than you might expect. Now comes RIVALS from Disney with an all-star cast and the good news is that the movie is worth watching.
You are doing a really commendable job
His triumph, however, is that he has the budget and time to do justice to the feel and spirit of the original book. The changes are minor and actually more clearly reflect the times and politics. Bella Maclean is brilliant in the central role of Tagie and Alex Hassel does a great job as Rupert, a role that is impossible to cast as no one in the story can be the character Cooper has created – part villain, part jerk, part whiny child.
I really liked it
However, the real star is the ensemble of excellent character actors, Emily Atack, Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson, who give the best performances of their careers. The 80s soundtrack is perfect, making Rivals a real triumph for Disney. It’s fun, it’s frothy, but there’s a deeper undercurrent that elevates it above a Hallmark movie and gives me hope that we’ll see more of this team and this universe in the future.
