In reality, he came right in

Plot

On October 11, 1975, at 11:30 p.m., a wild crew of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes before Saturday Night Live (1975) premiered. Matt Wood plays John Belushi on Saturday Night. Check out the rest of the cast and their real-life counterparts. Dan Aykroyd was the only original SNL cast member to read the script. When the show goes live, John Belushi enters the picture through a door 39 seconds late. Don Pardo: [practices his lines] Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dan… Ike…

this isn’t it and you’ll probably leave

[to Paul Shaffer] Don Pardo: How the hell do you pronounce that?Paul Shaffer: Aykroyd.. The film opens with a quote from Lorne Michaels: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s finished, it goes on because it’s 11:30 p.m.”. Seen in Eddie Murphy, the Black King of Hollywood (2023). Ixoo “Chickenweed” ChawzWritten by Don Cento and Martin GarnerPerformed by Don Cento and Martin GarnerThis is the harshest review ever for me because I don’t quite know what to make of this movie. If you didn’t grow up watching SNL or know anything about the original cast or the beginnings of SNL, you will be incredibly confused, lost, and bored. I think that’s my problem with this movie: you basically have to know everyone who knows SNL from the beginning. Lots of name-dropping and names and no backstories. If you go in and want to see a movie that explains that to you…

So the audience is really quite small

I grew up watching SNL (but in the Sandler, Farley, Spade, Farrell era). If my dad wasn’t so obsessed with older SNL episodes and had them on constantly, I would have hated this. My husband grew up watching MadTV and while he knew some big names like Belushi, Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd from movies when he was younger, he had no idea who the others were. We had to come home and watch the first episode and I had to explain a lot of things to him that he didn’t understand. Like the relationship with Lorne and his wife and the connection to Aykroyd there. Most people would have no idea though. I have to say, the cast is INCREDIBLE, I laughed at a few points, although I think it had the potential to be a little funnier. It’s not at all as inaccurate as some people say.

They nailed some scenes just perfectly, it’s uncanny

Most things were accurate, just a few things didn’t happen THAT night. The actors were absolutely amazing, and the 70’s vibe and shooting style was great. It really felt like you were right there in the middle of it. I felt a little stressed, I don’t even drink, and at the end I was like, “I need a drink, I feel like I just had a hard day at work.” I recommend watching the very first episode before you go if you haven’t seen it in a while. Unfortunately, I think this movie will be a flop, but they did a really bad job of making it watchable for anyone who is in the “boomer” generation today or close to it. A lot of people in that category don’t watch movies in the theater that much anymore, have died or are stuck in their Jesus habits now, they will be annoyed by things they probably didn’t feel in 1975. Of course, some people in that category will love the movie, but I’m guessing that’s a rare case. You might like it if you also read up on the early days of SNL first and what they all looked like, but that’s a lot of work for viewers.

I honestly think even I myself would have been distracted watching it from home

I don’t recommend watching it in the theater if you even think you might get lost in it, because you will. My husband and I were the only ones in the theater, no one else, and I caught him scrolling on his phone a couple of times. I’ve never seen him do that in a movie before, so I know he was bored. So, I don’t know, I give it 10/10 for the cast and the acting and how they captured the era brilliantly.
